Happy end of September! I hope you have enjoyed this first month of fall. This week’s meal plan features our favorite fish, a slow cooker freezer meal and homemade chicken soup. Have a great week!

Lunch ideas besides sandwiches

At the beginning of September, packing lunches for the kids was just one more thing to do at the end of the day (or first thing in the morning.) Now a few weeks into the month, staying motivated to pack healthy lunches with variety can be a bit draining. There are two new books on the market that I think will help you with packing lunches, whether you are cooking from scratch, or not. It’s real lunches here, not the super fancy bento box creations that are all over Pinterest and Instagram. Today I’m sharing my thoughts one of those books.

The Healthy Lunch Box eBook by KitchenStewardship

I know I was guilty of always sending a sandwich into school towards the later half of the school year. Raspberry and cream cheese was the staple, since school is nut-free. This ebook has changed how I think about the kid’s lunches, so there’s hope my kids will get something different even when lunch packing time is nutty. The Healthy Lunch Box is an ebook which you can read as a PDF, or on your iBooks app, Kindle or Nook. The first half is all about strategy…I learned that there is a right, and a wrong, way to pack the ice in the lunchbox to keep the food safe. It also made me think about packing the next day’s lunch throughout the day, not just at the end of the day when you are tired.

Kitchen Stewardship Healthy Lunch Box

The first half of the ebook is filled with tips and tricks with new ways to think about packing lunch.

This collection of both tips and recipes is geared towards moms who are cooking with real food. Think fresh fruits, homemade yogurt, mayo, dips, etc. Many things are totally doable, or you can purchase part of the recipe and make it your own. The ideas are helpful when it comes to moving “beyond the bread.” There are a number of recipes that I liked for dinner, which would then translate into a healthy lunch for the kids the next day. Plus there are ideas for lunch that I tend to forget about, like sending in guacamole and pita bread. A healthy, fun option for the kids, yet now a sandwich. (Click here to see the entire table of contents.)

What are some fun new ideas I’ve gotten out of this book?

  • Fruit and protein skewers
  • Guacamole, shredded chicken, salsa and GMO-free tortilla chips
  • Lettuce wraps with a mix of proteins
  • Yogurt and granola
  • Nitrate free pepperoni, mozzarella cheese, and pita bread slices

Click here to order your copy of The Healthy Lunchbox  If you are a real food newbie, this book is also helpful in educating you on what to be mindful of as you grocery shop. Katie’s site, Kitchen Stewardship, is one of the first blogs I started reading four years ago and it really changed how I cook today. We make our own yogurt now, regularly make our own chicken stock and because of her articles, I know why bone broth is so healthy for my family. Her Healthy Lunch Box book fits into our cooking lifestyle and it has given me a lot of good ideas to continue to test out in the coming months.

The Healthy Lunch Box eBook by KitchenStewardship

I received a copy of the Healthy Lunch Box to review and I’m so glad I did and happy to share it with you. There are some affiliate links in the post, but really I’m just sharing this because I know a lot of moms struggle with what to pack for lunch and I think this is one helpful resource.

Erba Vita Tips to keep kids healthy naturally

As the kids return to school, so comes the return of the running noses and germy hands. With a little baby at home, I am super aware of the imminent germs coming into our home. There are a few new things we are doing this year to keep us all healthy and the germs at bay. Here are some ways to keep your kids healthy naturally this season, plus a giveaway for natural remedies from Erba Vita. Erba Vita is a European company with high quality natural products that are effective, GMO-free, and pesticide-free.

  • Buy a fun soap canister for the kids so they enjoy hand washing. Help them from an early age learn how to wash their hands well. Get them to sing a favorite song so they learn how long they should wash their hands.
  • Offer kids a balanced diet with lots of variety in their fruits and veggies. Offer favorite fruits for snack, or make them a fun strawberry fruit roll-up.
  • Use a hand sanitizer when you are out and about. We tested out the Mother’s Therapy Organics kids sanitizer Erba Vita Immun Kids and love it so far. It’s not as drying as most alcohol based sanitizer as it includes aloe vera-based lotion. I keep a small one clipped on my diaper bag so I can use it after changing diapers on-the-go. The kids gave it a “no sting” vote.
  • Get the kids to bed early. (And mom and dad too!) A good night sleep helps the body defend against germs during the day.
  • Boost immunity with a supplement, like Erba Vita’s Immun Kids. For ages 4 and up, it contains active herbal ingredients to help support a healthy immune system.
  • Keep tissues handy so they are ready for sneezes. Teach kids how to sneeze into their elbow by encouraging them to “catch” their sneeze.
  • Keep extra toothbrushes on hand so you can replace them quickly if someone gets sick.
  • Everyone in the house should get a flu shot. I know people have strong opinions on this, I’m voting for flu shots for our family since our littlest one can’t get a shot and I want to keep him as healthy as possible in his first year of life.
  • Make sure the kids stay hydrated. Send a water bottle to school and limit the amount of sugary beverages they consume.

Erba Vita is offering one lucky reader a $150 worth of products of your choosing. You can check out their Kids’ Line, Women’s Health, Weight Loss, and more. Please enter via the Rafflecopter below. Giveaway is open to US residents only until Sept 30th. Winner will be notified via email.

I received some of the Erba Vita products to review, including their Leg Light Gel that I used at the end of my pregnancy. It was great to use at the end of the day. I appreciate their commitment to using quality ingredients and following the safest standard of testing. You can get some of their product line in Whole Foods now or order online. All opinions shared here are my own.

I also received the Mother’s Therapy Organic line of hand sanitizer and lotion. So far it’s one of the kids’ favorite as it’s not too sticky and doesn’t sting like most alcohol based sanitizers.

I was inspired by Megan Tietz who writes over at SortaCrunchy when she discussed “A Month for Mama.” As a mom with 6 month old twin boys, and two other girls, she has her hands full with taking care of other family members. As I read through her post about trying to carve out some “me” time, it resonated with me. My little Connor is now 12 weeks old and I was feeling the need to get out a little by myself. When I got the opportunity to test drive the new Chevy Volt electric car, it gave me a little extra motivation to get out of the house for some “me” time.

Chevy Volt test drive

JJ wanted to go for a drive in the electric car.

Monday night~ Got out after the kids went to bed for a little drive in the car. Couldn’t believe how quiet it was…both the car and the lack of noise from the back seat.

Chevy Volt ride

Madison got to go for a ride and tested out a new booster seat for the occasion.

Tuesday~ Snuck out with Madison to Trader Joe’s…just the girls. So easy to get out with just one child, it was a treat! I wonder what cars will be fueled with when she is old enough to drive…

Wednesday~ A haircut. Finally. Connor made the trip with me in the new car and was happy to snuggle with Beth, my hairstylist at Creative Expressions, while I enjoyed some magazine reading under the dryer.

Life gets in the way the other days…but my husband took it out for a spin. Thought it was cool, just a bit small for his 6’4″ frame.

volt ride

Sunday~ FINALLY got out for pedicure. Hooray!

volt vs minivan

Time to say goodbye to the Chevy Volt…back to minivan land.

How do you make time for yourself during the week?

I appreciate the opportunity to test drive the Chevy Volt and this is not a paid post. All opinions expressed here are my own.

I’m welcoming Kristina from The Greening of Westford back again today to highlight a few things you can recycle that you may not be aware of. Everyone assumes I write a “recycling” blog when they hear my blog name, but it isn’t what I spend a lot of time highlighting. I appreciate Kristina sharing this list of random recyclable items!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.  That old saying is in that order for a reason.  It’s better to reduce first, then reuse, then, when all else fails, recycle.  Jumping right in to reduce and reuse can be more difficult since it causes more changes to your normal routine.  With certain items, it just may not be an option.  Here are some easy items that can head to your recycling bin or local store instead of the trash.

Surprising Recycling Items

1)    Eye glasses   The Lions Club has collection boxes in many locations or ask a local eye glass shop or eye doctor.

2)    Brita Filters    Every Whole Foods recycles Brita filters through the Gimme 5 program.

3)    Cosmetic Tubes or jars   Origins Makeup Stores and counters will accept any brand of cosmetic tube, bottle or jar.

4)    Pizza Box    Some recyclers will accept pizza boxes without too much grease.  THIS IS VERY RECYCLER-dependent, so ask, it could ruin lots of other recyclables.  Even if you can’t recycle greasy boxes, you can usually still recycle the top part.

5)    Wine Corks    All Whole Foods locations collect natural wine corks in conjunction with Cork ReHarvest.

6)    Yoga Mats    Recycle Your Mat will recycle your used up yoga mat.  You can find a location near you or ship your mat.

7)    Plastic bags     Even if you bring your reusable bags everywhere, you probably still end up with a few. All #2 and #4 plastic bags/wrappers can be recycled at many grocery stores. This includes all grocery/store bags, produce bags, bread bags, toilet paper/paper towel wrapping, and bags for grapes, carrots, and cauliflower. Look for the #2 or #4 chasing arrows recycling symbol printed on the bag or wrapper. It’s on more than you might think!  The bags must be clean and dry.

A little known fact:  Trash pickup costs towns/cities big bucks!  If you live in a city or town that pays any portion of your trash/recycling pickup, get in touch with them.  They are very eager to encourage recycling where they can to reduce this budget and will be a huge wealth of information on reducing your trash in your specific area.

Do you know any more surprising items to recycle?

Eat Seasonably Farmers Market

Our local farmers market opens in one week! I’m excited to start picking up some local produce and support our farmers and specialty food makers. The easiest way to get inspired at the market is to ask the farmer how they like to prepare what’s in season. Sometimes they have the tastiest, and easiest, recipes they can share with you. There are also lots of seasonal recipes on Pinterest, from salads to dessert options.  I also have accumulated a little collection of cookbooks that help me come up with new ways to use vegetables and eat seasonally.

Farmers Market Inspiration RandomRecycling

Vegetables Every Day~ this was a gift from my friend Christy. I love that it’s organized by vegetable so it’s a quick way to find new recipes. Have some swiss chard you don’t know what to do with? Just look it up for a bunch of new ways to prepare the leafy green. There’s also notes to see what other similar greens could work in the same recipe. I think it’s a great cookbook for getting inspired at the farmers market, or for those families participating in a CSA for the summer. The book is filled with beautiful illustrations of the produce included.

The Homesteader’s Kitchen~ this is a specialty cookbook that is beautiful to flip through and the recipes are a level above basic. There are some unique ingredients in some of the recipes which is a great way to spark up a conversation with your farmer.

Cooking from the farmer’s market~ this is a gorgeous collection of photos and recipes. It’s also organized by vegetables, but also includes fruit. There are recipes for all occasions, from breakfast to appetizers to Honeydew-Lime Ice Pops. The photographs are very detailed so if you are not sure if you brought home a green onion or a leek, you can verify it with this cookbook.

Do you visit your local farmers market? Or participate in a CSA?

Happy Memorial Day! I hope everyone is enjoying a long weekend. We are excited to finally get a day of sun and be able to play outside with the kids all day. The menu this week could be tricky…baby still hasn’t arrived so there may be some swings in the next week or two (or month or two!). I have freezer meals tucked away but I’ll wait until the baby arrives and I’m home to break those out.

Today we (almost) could have put the heat on as it was a little chilly when we woke up. By Thursday, it’s supposed to be 90 degrees. If it gets too hot, we may just have to make smoothies for dinner!

Monday Meal Plan May 27

Sunday~ BBQ day with sausages and hot dogs, corn on the cob and coleslaw.

Monday~ Salmon burgers, pesto pasta and salad

Tuesday~ Meatballs (Madison’s request), pasta and green beans

Wednesday~ C.O.R.N. {Clean Out Refrigerator Night}

Thursday~ Eggs

Friday~ Pizza

Saturday~ Chicken Salad Sandwiches

Did you notice how clear the chalkboard menu plan is this week? No, I did not master some new photo editing tool. I was sent the new Lullaby chalkboard paint to test out and it works beautifully!  Lullaby Paints has 16 fun colors of chalkboard paints and they’re totally non-toxic, zero-VOC, and safe for my kitchen. I love how smooth the paint went on and the colors on the kid’s section of the menu board seem much more vibrant now too.

Walmart Overnight Diapers RandomRecycling

I don’t talk about it much here on the blog, but we are a cloth diapering family. My friends know this and ask questions when they see the cute cloth diapers my kids wear. What they don’t see is that we made a choice a long time ago to use disposable diapers for nighttime. Is it a perfect, eco-friendly choice? No, but I’m ok with our decision as a family. As the tagline here says, our story is all about green living for modern families. As someone who felt really comfortable with cloth diapers, I was intimidated by complicated process of nighttime cloth diapers when my daughter was just a few months old.

Cloth diapers or disposables for nighttime

I did try the “doublers” with my cloth diapers and they just didn’t work for us. The babies and sheets got wet in the middle of the night, plus they seemed awfully uncomfortable in the oversized diapers. I looked into options with wool inserts, but the complicated process of prepping them was just too much for me when I was a full-time working mom with a new baby. Early on I found a brand of cloth diapers that worked and I often saved money by buying “seconds.” The overnight diaper choices were often a lot more expensive and I just didn’t want to make the investment.

Fast forward four years, I have two children wearing overnight diapers. One generally wears pull-ups and the other one wears standard overnight diapers. I’ve never been loyal to one brand as I usually try to buy what is the best price. Overnight diapers are more expensive than regular disposables, but once your child needs that extra nighttime protection, you just have to make the switch.

Parents Choice Diapers Sizing

I like seeing the size of the diapers clearly on the back. Much easier when you have multiple children in diapers.

We recently had the opportunity to try out the Walmart Parent’s Choice Overnight Baby Diapers. Our little guy gave them a test drive and they worked just as well as the other brands we have purchased. He liked them because they had little bears on them. I liked them because there were no leaks. I recently purchased a more eco-friendly pull-up option for my daughter to try at night. Every morning she changes out of the pull-up AND her pajama bottoms because they are damp. With the new baby on the way, I’m trying to reduce the amount of laundry I need to do, not increase it. Not all overnight diapers can stand up to the job. The Parent’s Choice diapers are a lot less money than most of the other brands I have bought before at only $0.16/diaper. Compare this to their competitors at $0.31-$0.42/diaper and it is a great value. You can also get it delivered, although I do wish they offered free shipping for their diapers like Amazon or Diapers.com.

With a new baby arriving soon, we will be in diapering land for a few more years to come. You have to make choices that work for your family, your schedule and your budget. I hope you find a system that you are comfortable with and give the Parent’s Choice overnight diapers a test run yourself.

What works for your family when it comes to diapering your kids?

Night time protection for babies is an important consideration for parents as their little one grows. Ordinary diapers may not have enough absorbent capacity to handle multiple voids over long periods of time with older babies. When wet mornings become the norm, parents start looking for more protection to guard against overnight leaks.

Parent’s Choice Overnight Baby Diapers are super absorbent for overnight and long-trip protection. This is an overnight diaper at prices that everyone can afford!

referral_badge-e21a0bf93c2d04d285ba89d2d14d8cb0If I’m not cooking with my kids, you can often find us at the craft table working on some kind of project. Sometimes it’s free play with the supplies we have on hand, and other times we work through specific craft activities. We received Kiwi Crate craft boxes for the past few months and I was ready to see what else is out there. When I was in Philly, I met the Wummelbox, a multi-craft box geared towards kids ages 3-8. My sample box arrived pretty quickly and the kids couldn’t wait to get started.

What is a Wummelbox?

Wummelbox craft

Each craft box arrives at your doorstep with 3-4 creative projects to work on with your kids, all fitting a particular theme. Depending on their age, some need lots of supervision while other projects can be done independently. My kids are 4 and 2 so I sit in between them to work on our little masterpieces.

The first thing that excited me about the Wummelbox is the projects are wrapped separately. The Kiwi Crates are slightly sorted but my kids usually pull one thing out and then it’s all jumbled together. I liked being able to take one project out at a time, depending on how much time I have available to devote to “craft” time.

Madison was happy when she saw a new package with scissors. Although it’s her third pair, she was happy because they were pink. Usually there are more gender neutral colors, we just got lucky with the pink pair!  I appreciate the extra scissors because we now have  more craft supplies for play dates.

Wummelbox Music and Sound

Wummelbox uses eco-friendly materials when appropriate, plus they try to incorporate the packaging into a craft. I like having less waste to deal with during clean-up time. The only negative I found with the first box we reviewed, Music and Sound Box, is the number of small pieces. Not a big deal for the bigger kids, but when I have baby #3 crawling around, I’ll have to be more diligent about keeping the tiny metal balls and mini magnets on the table.

Wummelbox is one of those lovely subscription services where you can sign up for as much or as little as you would like. I think the subscriptions make great gifts, especially from the grandparents.

  • Try a Wummel, 1 month subscription $34.95
  • Little Wummel, 3 month subscription $24.95/month
  • Big Wummel, 12 month subscription $19.95/month

Want to try out the Wummelbox? Enter to win a box that will be delivered to your door. Use the rafflecopter below to enter, giveaway closes on May 20, 2013. Winner will have 48 hours to claim their prize. US residents only.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Disclosure: I was provided a 3 month subscription to Wummelbox to help facilitate my review here. I look forward to testing out these boxes with the kids once the new baby arrives. It will be great to have an activity project ready to go, especially if we have a rainy summer day and we are stuck inside. All opinions shared here are my own.

When I first saw this collection of ebooks I was pretty excited. I already have some of them so was familiar with the authors. This ebook library is pretty big, and each book isn’t for everyone. However, there probably is at least 4-5 books that you can learn from making the price of the package worthwhile. It’s a homemaking theme, so it covers food, budgeting, parenting, schooling, marriage, health, blogging, holidays and more. It’s not just for my eco-friendly readers, but for any mom, sister, grandparent, newlywed or blogger that is interested in building up her home-keeping resources. (I should say dad, brother or grandfather too, right.)

Why am I buying the ebook bundle?

I am already a fan of ebooks. They are with me on the go in my iPhone or iPad, plus I have others organized on my laptop. When I download a bundle, I have everything go to my laptop. Then I pick and choose as needed and email it to myself to open in either my Kindle app or iBooks app so I have it when I’m waiting at a doctor’s office or traveling.

The reason I’m buying my own bundle is because I wanted these specific books for myself. I’ve seen them advertised and now is the right time to purchase them, plus the balance of the library.

The cost of these four books alone is $34.91 so the low bundle price of $29.97 already gives me a deal, plus I’ll get all the free products too. Keep reading to the end of the post (sorry it’s really long!) and the freebies are noted at the end.

Some of my favorite ebooks I have already read and would recommend:
