Have you ever wanted to buy more from Mom and Pop stores, instead of the big chain stores?  I know I have tried to spend my dollars with more small businesses, especially local ones, in the past year.  With the economy still struggling, there are many people needing a larger audience to sell their product.  This is why I’m starting a new shop on Random Recycling.  I want to give more small business owners a broader audience for their unique products.
The shop is going to be powered by Open Sky, which is a cool new platform that I feel brings value to all of my readers.  This will allow me to share personal experiences with products with real people.  If you have a question, just ask and I’ll answer.  Open Sky allows this community experience within the shop.  It brings together great products from sellers that want you to love their creation.  If you don’t love it, you actually can return it for up to a year.  Yes, that is not a typo.  You really have 365 days to return something if it doesn’t meet your expectations.  Where does that happen these days?
Our big Grand Opening will be on August 10th, which explains the clock badge at the top of this page.  I am looking forward to sharing with you products that I find useful in my home that help me live up to my goal of being more environmentally friendly.  As I find great new products that are made from recycled materials, I look forward to spreading the word through my shop.  If you have suggestions for unique product you would love to see in our shop, please let me know.  I welcome your thoughts as I build this store.   Check back on August 10th for the official launch!

How cute are these bean bag chairs from Pottery Barn?  Want to know what’s even better- they are filled with 100% recycled polystyrene and Styrofoam.  If Styrofoam can’t be totally eliminated yet, at least it can make its way into a new, cozy home.  Got a favorite recycled product to share?  Post it to our Facebook page!

It seems to be inescapable these days, everyone is talking about finding a safer sunscreen or sunblock.  As someone who spends a lot of time at the beach, and is very fair skinned, I am a major buyer of sunscreen products.  The EWG Guide that was released this year got my attention as a number of my favorite products did not get a great score.  Many of these are products marketed for “Babies” so I expected them to be on the safe side.  Little did I know that the active ingredient could potentially be harmful.

The FDA is responsible for regulating the sunscreen industry, yet it does not have any clearly defined rules to govern products making the claim of organic or natural.  As news reports come out about the potential health hazards of sunscreens with nanosized particles of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, the FDA has been awfully quiet about it.  That leaves all of us to determine what is safe to put on ourselves and our kids, and sort through all the latest information in the media.
Here is what I chose to do.
1. Try out some mineral sunscreens
2. Buy a cute cover-up
3. Dress my little one in a wet-suit like swimsuit plus a hat.

My new favorites in the sunscreen class are California Baby for little Madison, and Miessence Reflect Outdoor Balm for myself.  I used California Baby SPF 30 Sunscreen Lotion last year when Maddie was little and I was really happy with it. The California Baby SPF 30+ Sunblock Stick is awesome for getting the job done fast when you have someone wiggling away. I did try another mineral sunscreen on myself and got a terrible burn on my arms and back.  You really need to try them out for yourself to see what works.

The Miessence is a product line I recently got introduced to.  I won a giveaway and got to try a number of their facial care products.  My favorite is the Balancing Skin Conditioner., but the products together made my skin feel so fresh and clean, especially after a day at the beach.    The Reflect Outdoor Balm worked great and didn’t drip, even on the hottest days.  It did give my skin a slight white cast, but it was hardly noticeable once I was outside.

Want to try the Miessence Organic line?  One lucky reader will win a $25 gift certificate to Organicology.com.  Stop by their site and check out all the great products they have to offer.   I’m making it really simple and you just have to leave a comment here to be entered to win the giveaway.  Giveaway will close on July 31st.

Good luck with finding the right sunscreen for your family.  The important thing is to protect your skin.  Using an umbrella (we use this one: 6 ft Solar Guard Beach Umbrella – UPF 150+ Wind / Water Resist) , SPF clothing, and a wide brimmed hat all help defeat the sun’s harmful rays.  What other ways do you try to beat the burn, but still play outside?
***Congratulations Janice, lucky # 6! You are the winner of the $25 gift card to Organicology.com. Thanks to all that entered.

Disclosure: I was provided a sample of the Miessence product to test.  It in no way influenced my opinions voiced here.

Forgive me for my lack of recent posts as the dog days of summer have made me a bit lazy.  I am finding it tough to get out of vacation mode with the hot weather and beach-filled weekends.  As I write this, yet another thunderstorm is rolling through, which hopefully will bring us a cooler breeze!
During my beach vacation, I found myself slightly challenged “being green.”  I felt funny throwing away corn husks and strawberry hulls as I was lacking our compost. We also had a lack of kitchen towels, so paper towels became my friend again.  The vacation made me realize that our eco-driven practices really are habits now in our family.

I did find a couple of new products that really helped out while on vacation.  My favorite is my new Hydros Bottle Blue — Everyday Filtering Water Bottle.  It looks like your typical water bottle, except it has a fast flow filter built in.  When I was out shopping and found a local watering bubbler (fountain, or whatever you call it), I filled my Hydros bottle and there was no funny taste.  The bottle is BPA free and each filter lasts about 3 months. Just imagine how many plastic bottles you will keep out of landfills by switching to a Hydros bottle. The filters are recyclable too! Visit their website for more details. At the time of this writing, the bottle is listed for $29.99 on Amazon. (Hydros Bottle Blue — Everyday Filtering Water Bottle)  Feel extra good about your purchase as each one helps support Operation Hydros, which helps bring safe drinking water to those affected by the Global Water Crisis.  Learn more about Operation Hydros and order your 24oz bottle directly from HydrosBottle.com.

Even if my kitchen wasn’t as green as my own, I still tried to practice these tips.
1. I reused the water from boiling corn. Let it cool and then use it to water flowers.  I do the same thing with a bowl of water used to wash off lettuce.
2. Since we did need to purchase paper products, I choose recycled options.  At least I can spread the green wealth to the next renters.
3. Go easy on yourself and skip doing the dishes, I did whenever possible.  Look for the bare by Solo 10-Inch Pulp-Molded Plates, Made with Plant-Based Renewable Resources, 15-Count Packages (Pack of 12).  They may not be the best option, but I’m saving water right?
4. We let the beach towels dry outside overnight.  No need to wash them every day.  We didn’t have a washer/dryer at our place so we rinsed out our bathing suits each night and let them dry in the (hot) sun.
5. Leave the condiments for the next guest if you are in a rental, it is crazy that people have to throw them out just to have the next person buy the same thing again.
6. Next time I’m packing a couple of kitchen towels if I’m not traveling far. We just go through them so much and I can use them to safely transport all our electronics on our next trip.

I’m trying to get myself out of vacation mode, but no promises here.  The lightening is getting intense so it’s time to head back inside, and eat some ice cream. I have lots of great product reviews to share and I am also very excited about the start of my new OpenSky shop.  More details on this to come!

Are you in vacation mode too?  Do you have any eco-tips for those of us in a lazy mode during these hot summer days?

Disclosure: Hydros did provide me with product to review; this in no way influenced my opinions voiced here.

Remember summer vacations when you spent all day outside and went to bed early because you were that tired?  You went barefoot because it was easier, and showers were taken outside.  I just had one of those glorious weeks.  We packed up and spent eights days away from home in a rustic cottage, free of wireless internet and a dishwasher.  It was a great opportunity to step out of the fast lane.
As I prepared for vacation, I realized I should also be planning for my blog maintenance.  I’ve read great articles about guest posts, yet didn’t get my ducks in a row to map this out.  I could have scheduled a post, or even uploaded a short post from my Iphone during the week away. (I wasn’t totally cut off from the world, just close enough.)  I have numerous reviews I’m excited to write, and great eco-eating tips I want to share. Yet, when night fall came, I didn’t have the heart to turn on a computer and write.  It was enough for me to read a novel or a magazine, with my husband at my side.  There were board games to play with great friends on other nights.  My mind did wander to the thoughts of the posts I wasn’t writing, or the blogs I wasn’t keeping up with.  Each time though, there was some other great event that I couldn’t pass up.  Eating breakfast out, going to a fish market, and walking the beach all took precedence over email, Twitter, and blogging.  I realized that my change in page rank will never take a seat in my memory bank, but watching my daughter run into the waves will be there forever.  Here is just a glimpse at the fun moments that made me realize it is okay to take a vacation from the wonderful world of blogging.

Have you ever wondered where your old dollar bills go once they are barely recognizable?  I found one answer in the new Source toothbrush by Radius.  They are using a blend of recycled US dollar bills, recycled flax and recycled wood to make the handles of this toothbrush. Combined, this creates a bio-plastic, which is 100% renewable or recyclable.  Pretty cool in my book.  I have never had anything but a plastic toothbrush that I through away every three months.

The other benefit of the Source I liked is the ability to discard the head of the toothbrush and not the whole thing when it’s time for a new one.  That easily reduces my waste.  The handle was really comfortable to use and the bristles were not too stiff. For the left handers out there, you can flip around the handle so it’s still ergonomically correct for your left hand. To top it off, the broader head made brushing easier and less complicated than with some of the newer toothbrushes on the market.

If you want the chance to check out a Radius toothbrush, drop me a comment and you will be entered to win the Source.  Contest open until July 14th to US residents.

Can’t wait to win, stop over at Radius Toothbrush to learn where to buy their toothbrushes.  You will have a cool conversation piece for your bathroom!

***And the winner is #3, Sophia. Congratulations and enjoy your toothbrush made of money!

Disclosure: I was provided products to test by Radius which in no way influenced my opinion.  My thoughts are completely my own.

You know it must be good when you child won’t give you back her EMPTY container because she thinks there is at least one more squeeze left.  My daughter Madison’s new favorite snack is the Plum Organics 100% Mish Mash fruit snack.  It’s also my new favorite because it packs so easily into her lunch box for daycare.  She just started playing in the pools at school and is hungrier than usual.  I have been adding either the squeezable fruit snack, or little snack size sandwich bar.  Her teacher also noted how much she loved it, and I learned that many other kids in the class also have it with their lunch too.  I don’t know about you, but planning and making healthy lunches takes effort and organization.  I’m really happy to have found the Plum Organics line of products because they are pre-packaged and ready to go.  Did I mention the packaging is BPA free too?

If you have the younger set at home, Plum Organics offers squeezable baby food as well.  Maddie tried the Just Bananas, which got a “yum.”  I love reading the back list of ingredients, because it really is just bananas.  Plus, you can squeeze out just a little at a time so it cuts down on wasted food.  I think it’s great that the Plum Organics line can grow with your child, from the time they first start trying real food, to the time when they shriek because they are desperate for a snack!

There are so many ways you can decorate with over sized glass jars.  You can create a terrarium and watch it grow. Or fill with sand and a (soy) candle for a romantic touch. With a leftover from my wedding decor, I filled a large glass jar with wine corks. (I’m going to work on making a cork mat like I saw over at Craftynest)

Do your homework and know your options when looking for the glass jars.  If you want an antique that is in great shape, Pottery Barn has a limited number of Antique Pickling jars that are beautiful. The price ranges from $139-$179.

If you want to do a little more searching, you can find similar jars on Ebay.  I found one with a unique look and was well loved. The picture doesn’t post well so you can visit the link here. At this moment, the current bid is only $19.99.  Also, if you want to do a national search on Craigslist, you can do it by searching for Craigslist via Google and enter your search on the results page. I didn’t find any large glass jars, but lots of blue and pink Mason jars that could be a nice addition to my collection…

Here’s a quick list of some Father’s Day gifts for those of you who haven’t picked out anything yet, and you know who you are…

Titleist Pro V1 AAA Recycled Golf Balls (36 Pack)
For the golfer in your life, see if he’ll notice any difference in hitting a recycled golf ball.
Made by Hand: Searching for Meaning in a Throwaway World
I just started reading this book myself and it’s quite amusing.  It could inspire Dad to finish a project he started…
Sodastream Fountain Jet Soda Maker Starter Kit
If you drink seltzer like we do in our house, this is a must have. It will cut down on your consumption of plastic bottles, and you can create your own favorite flavor combinations.
Men's Earth Organic Cotton T-shirt (Large)
I have been on a quest for “cool” tees for my husband this season.  It has not been an easy task, but this one passed the test.
Lastly, maybe Dad doesn’t need another gift.  A relaxing afternoon and a great steak dinner may be all he really wants.  How will you be celebrating Father’s Day?

I know we would all like more “green” in our wallets, but in the meantime, how about choosing a “green” wallet?  Would you believe this wallet is made from recycled ties? I love finding products that are upcycling.  It’s only $23.99, and is a tri-fold wallet, just right for Dad.  Narwhal also carries passport covers and mini wallets, perfect for carrying just a license and a credit card.  What else do you need when your wife take’s you out to celebrate Father’s Day?
You can purchase one of Narwhal’s innovative wallets from their online store.

Anyone else have creative uses for ties that have seen better days?  I have a bag of them ready to go for an Easter-egg dying project that I put off every year…
