It’s nearly turkey time!! I love Thanksgiving and all the delicious food that comes with it.  We are not hosting on Thursday, but instead will cook a leisurely “second” Thanksgiving on Sunday.  The leftovers are one of the best parts and we miss out when we don’t host.  I think I’ll get our turkey from Trader Joe’s which looks to have the best price on natural, antibiotic free turkeys.  We will make stuffing, mashed potatoes, squash and homemade gravy using our own chicken stock.  Maybe corn bread pudding too, which is a recipe I have come to love from my husband’s family.

What is on your Thanksgiving menu?

Easy Chicken Curry from weelicious.com

Here is what’s on tap for us the rest of the week…
Sunday~ Easy chicken curry with rice and salad on the side.
Monday~ Beef stew in the Ninja slow cooker. Egg noodles on the side.
Tuesday~ Soy-citrus scallops with soba noodles, sautéed snow peas.
Wednesday~ Sandwich night.
Thursday~ Thanksgiving! I’m in charge of making apple pie.
Friday~ Pizza night
Saturday~ Cheesy mini meatloaf, green beans.
Sunday~ 2nd Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

We recently got the opportunity to review the new Bosch Junior Workbench from One Step Ahead.  As a fan of One Step Ahead for having hard to find child proofing products and the best bathroom stool around, I was happy to test out one of their items from their 2012 holiday toy line.

JJ is nearly two and he loves to play with a friend’s tool bench every time he visits his house.  I chose the Bosch Junior Workbench and the Bosch Toy Toolbox and Tool Set to review.  In the eyes of a child, the item is great.  There are just enough pieces to keep him entertained, and also enough that his big sister can play with it at the same time.  JJ spends most of his time hammering anything…including the windows.  It’s times like those that makes me ok with buying a plastic toy occasionally.

From the parent perspective, it was easy to set up. It took about 15 minutes total.  Although I like the tool box set, there are some duplicate toys from what is already included with the tool bench.  I think you would be better off ordering the separate drill which is definitely the toy the kids are fighting over.  It’s battery operated and moves the gears on the table so it was a big hit for both a two and four year old.

Now it’s your turn to win the whole package!  This is a $90 value giveaway including the Bosch Tool Bench and Tool Box and Tool Set items.  Giveaway will end on 11/24/12 at midnight.  Contest open to US residents only.

I have been working on my holiday gift list for family and friends and thought I would share some of my favorites with all of my readers. This is the first installment of the 2012 Gift Guides.  There will also be one for Mom, one for The Home and one guide of eco-friendly shopping sites.  The first guide is for Toddlers, ages one to four. Some span longer ages which is always great in my book.

The gift guides will also be a sneak peak of some giveaways that will be happening on the blog in the coming weeks…

My daughter is nearly four and loves all things imagination related.  These are some things on her wish list this year.
1. Starlight Pink Canopy from Magic Cabin
2. Kiwi Crates~ order a subscription or order specific “crates” or projects. They currently have some adorable holiday crates available.
3. Stockmar beeswax crayons.  No wrapper, no mess.
4. Melissa and Doug grocery cart.

And for the boys…our little guy is nearly two and loves to play with the toys that don’t belong to him.  He really just wants to keep up with his big sister. Here are some favorites on his list.
5. Tiger Headphones– big sister has the Panda bear ones and he LOVES to try them on. I think he will need his own by next summer.
6. One Step Ahead Tool Bench- he plays with a similar one at a friends house. I think he will love it!
7. Push Trike- we have one already and highly suggest it for the one-two year old crowd. Ours is well loved.
8. Llama Llama Time to Share book– we will read this to BOTH children.

9. Urban-Canvas- beautiful craft projects.
10. Wooden Train Set from Pottery Barn Kids
11. Duralex Glass Dishes from Mighty Nest- this goes into the “need” list. We have one set and love it. The glass really is toddler safe.

This season, I’m going to try to follow this mantra of shopping for the kids:

-Something they want
-Something they need
-Something to wear
-Something to read

What other toddler toys are you a fan of?

Have you ever asked yourself the question, “Why is living and buying green important to your family?” I find myself asking this question every time I’m at the grocery store making decisions. Organic or local? The only blueberries in the store are not organic, but they are one of the worst offenders. What to do?  Sometimes I can spend five minutes reading bread labels, checking to see if whole wheat is the first ingredient or if it uses high fructose corn syrup.

Although it takes time, I think our family will be healthier in the long run by making greener choices. I like to think of it as preventative medicine.  I may pay a little extra now, but I’ll make this sacrifice instead of paying for it later with health problems. There are too many unknowns and new ingredients in our environment, I would rather air on the side of caution. Especially when it comes to my kids.

When it comes to conventional cleaning products,  I find the smell of so many overwhelming. What’s really in them to make them so fragrant.  Where does that smell go?  If it’s getting into the air in the store, it’s certainly going to get into the air in your home.  Over the past few years, we have walked away from traditional household cleaners to more eco-friendly, safer options.  We often buy ones from Seventh Generation as I believe they make a big effort to choose the safest options available, while still creating products that work.
Seventh Generation created this little video about what’s really lurking in your household cleaners…and what’s not in theirs. It will make you think twice about what you put in your grocery cart.

Now I’ll ask you the question, “Why is living and buying green important to your family?”

Happy Veteran’s Day! I still can’t believe it’s nearly mid November and Thanksgiving is around the corner. Are you planning your menu yet? Do you make the same thing every year or try out some new recipes?

Here is what’s on deck for us this week…
Sunday~ Eggs for dinner. Mom’s night out at Sofra for a blogging event!
Monday~ Sausage, white bean and spinach soup.
Tuesday~ Field trip to Gloucester! Daddy is on his own with soup leftovers
Wednesday~ Time to cook our steaks from the last farmers market. I think we will cook it in the pan, unless it’s nice enough to grill. Asparagus on the side.
Thursday~ Whole Chicken and carrots. Might be a pressure cooker night since I have a Ford blogging event during the day. I can cook the chicken super fast late afternoon and it tastes like it has cooked all day.
Friday~ Pizza night using the leftover chicken.  Mom gets another night out to celebrate the Parent Talk Sale committee.
Saturday~ Kids hot dog night!

What are you making this week?

The cold has arrived in Boston. I don’t mind the chill in the air, but I don’t like what it does to my skin. I know the dry air has arrived when my the skin on my hands start to crack. Time to break out some of my favorite winter skin regimens.

Coconut Oil
I use this all the time for my hands. As soon as my knuckles start to dry out I slater this on a few times a day.  I keep it in a little tin and stash them in my bags and all over the house. It’s the only thing that doesn’t burn my sensitive skin once it’s already in damaged mode.

Sunscreen
Yes, you should be wearing sunscreen year round. You and the kids. Plan ahead for skiing, the sun is even stronger when it’s bouncing off the snow.  I recently tried out Coola Sunscreen line and love it. It’s an organic, mineral based sunscreen line. The sunscreen rubs in really well so you don’t get that white finish that most mineral based products give you. If I’m spending a lot of time outside, I wear the Matte Finish Tinted Sunscreen. The kids get the unscented SPF 50 moisturizer. I had a little trouble getting the pump to work the first time, but then it went on smoothly.

Lotions
I really like the kids Dolphin Organics Fragrance Free lotion. If I don’t have coconut oil on hand, this is my favorite option. Plus I like to use this on the kids after their bath when their skin feels dry.

On my list to try this winter is some MadeOn hard lotion bars. I have read wonderful things about them online from some of my favorite bloggers and I think this is the season I’ll pick up a bar to test for myself.

DIY Masks/Scrubs
This time of year it’s really important to scrub off the buildup of excess skin. I find making my own sugar scrub to be an easy way to enter the world of DIY beauty products. I have a Pinterest Board full of DIY Beauty Projects to keep your skin healthy and glowing.

What is your favorite winter skincare treatment?

I hope this meal plan finds you well, despite the tough week for so many people dealing with storm damage. We are very lucky that our family and friends are safe, although some are still without power. This may be the year we finally buy a generator, just in case.

On the meal plan this week…

Sunday~ Beef Stew in the Ninja Cooking System (High 4 1/2 hours) I use a Martha Stewart recipe and adapt it for the slow cooker. (Don’t miss the secret of the pearl onion!) Egg noodles on the side.
Monday~Crispy Apricot Pork Chops.  Family favorite!  Garlicky green beans on the side.
Tuesday~Halibut Fish Sticks. Coat fish strips in milk, then panko. Pan fry on medium high heat about 3 mins per side or until fish is flaky. Sweet potato fries baked in the oven.
Wednesday~ Homemade Chicken Nuggets, Peas and some pasta shells.
Thursday~ Grilled Cheese and Slow Cooker Tomato Soup.
Friday~ Pizza night!

Hope everyone has a great week!
