Posts

That dreaded day has come again in our home. The one where a little someone comes out of his room in the middle of the night to say hello. That little someone is only 21 months old and we were not ready for him to become an escape artist in the midnight hours just yet.

Wearing a sleepsack can keep babies from crawling out of their cribs

We have been through this before, but never at this age. Our other two kids crawled out of their cribs closer to 28 months. When it happened, we quickly made the switch to the “big girl/boy” bed. This time it’s a little more complicated and requires a room change and redecorating. This was not a project we wanted to tackle this winter.

So I started doing my research to see if I was making a mistake keeping Connor in the crib. The last thing we want is for him to get hurt, but I also don’t think he is old enough to make the move to a big bed.

Toddlers who can hoist themselves over the rail can easily fall and fracture a bone,” says Paula Elbirt, M.D., director of pediatric medical education at Brooklyn Medical Center.

Okay. So now what.

I continued reading and learned that children can start transitioning to a big bed from 18-30 months. While not at the lowest end of the spectrum, 21 months still feels too soon.

What else to do?

The other suggestions for keeping the crawling baby/toddler out of your room at night are as follows

  • Make them wear a sleep sack. (We love the Merino Kids brand.)
  • Turn the crib around if it has a high side in the back.
  • Watch them on a video monitor during nap time and bed time to coax them to lie down.
  • Take all items out of the crib, like stuffed animals or crib bumpers, that could be used as a stepping stool. Take out even the breathable bumpers too!

Connor actually climbed out of his crib in a sleep sack so that won’t work for us. He even waddles to our room wearing one.

Watching on the monitor is actually working for us. We can tell him to lie down on the intercom and he (surprisingly) listens. After a week of showing us his new climbing skills, he has taken a little break. If he starts up again, we will try to flip the crib around.

I wish they would stay this small forever

He is our one and only thumb sucker.

Has this happened in your home? What did you do when it happened?

Disclosure: Merino Kids sent us a sleep sack for review. It is easy to wear, great soft fabric and long enough for a growing toddler. Here’s a little more info about Merino Kids:

  • Made from luxuriously soft Woolmark-certified Superfine Merino. Expertly stitched by master tailors in India.
  • GOTS-certified organic combed cotton outer layer gives extra durability for years of use. Machine washable.
  • Naturally fire-resistant. Rated low fire risk without fireproofing chemicals.
  • Fits growing child safely and comfortably for up to two years. Excellent value compared to other sleep sacks that last only a few months.
  • Remarkable natural ability to regulate body temperature. Captures and circulates air to insulate child when the room temperature falls, and releases excess body heat and moisture as the room temperature rises. Child stays warm and dry without overheating.
  • Recommended by textile scientists. A 2010 scientific study concluded infants are less likely to overheat or to become damp and chilled in a Merino Kids sleep sack compared with polar fleece sleep sacks.
  • Meets all U.S. and international safety standards including UK BSI sleep sack safety certification. Child has freedom to move and room to grow, yet can’t slip underneath or wriggle out and wake uncovered and cold. Contoured bodice stays clear of face.

Thank you Merino Kids for sending us a sample. All opinions shared are my own. If only a sleep sack would keep him from crawling out of his crib!

This post is brought to you by VTech and The Motherhood celebrating the newest VTech Video Baby Monitor. All opinions are my own.

Are baby video monitors worth the money?

I still remember the day we registered for baby gear while expecting our first child. It was overwhelming with all of the choices and baby gear I need. I tried to be mindful of not registering for everything, but it was hard. When it came to baby monitors, I had to decide whether to register for a standard one or a video one. Are they worth the extra money? This was over six years ago and I wish I had decided then to register for the video one.

Here’s why. Having a video monitors gives you peace of mind when the babies are infants all the way through even kindergarten and beyond. Today we own two video monitors and excited to test out the new VTech Safe & Sound monitor this month.

3 Favorite reasons why video baby monitors are great for Babies

  1. Turn the volume up really loud so you can hear them breathing. If you haven’t had a baby yet, you will be amazed how often you listen to make sure they are breathing. Stressful, but better if you can do it from another room and not risk waking a sleeping baby.
  2. Really see if a baby is truly awake, or just a little restless. It’s easier to wait it out if you can see the baby on-screen to better judge if you need to go into the room.
  3. They are just so sweet, and quiet, sleeping who wouldn’t want to peek in on them.

3 Favorite reasons why video baby monitors are great for Playrooms

  1. You get to hear what really happened amongst siblings.
  2. Kids get a little independent play time, while still being supervised.
  3. I can cook dinner upstairs while I watch the kids play safely in their playroom together.

The VTech’s Safe&Sound® Pan & Tilt Full Color Video Baby Monitor has been fun to test out. It has 3 of my must have’s in a baby monitor: a wide scanning area, temperature, and intercom. There are lots of other bells and whistles, but those three are key. It’s so easy to use my preschooler can talk on the intercom and change the direction of the camera. (Set up was done in under 5 minutes too!) For families with multiple children, or needing a camera in a playroom, additional cameras can be added to the same parent monitor. Our neighbor has this set-up for her girls and it’s great to find a monitor that can automatically cycle between different cameras.

Video Baby Monitor at home in the kitchen

I recently read Bringing Up Bébé: One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom of French Parenting (now with Bébé Day by Day: 100 Keys to French Parenting). They spoke of “the pause” that french mothers took before immediately rushing in to a fussing baby. A video monitor helps you in that transition of letting a baby start to self soothe himself back to sleep. We had a video monitor for the first time with Connor from the time he was born. It has been great to hear him start to wake up, but hold off going in until I saw him wiggling around. As a toddler, it’s even more helpful as I can tell him “I’ll be right up” to keep him calm as he waits for me. Being the third child, he has been forced to wait for me at times. (most times.) Turns out he is the best sleeper in the house. I do think giving him the time to sometimes go back to sleep mid-nap has been valuable and I would be less apt to wait if I didn’t have the video monitor to gauge his needs.

Although I generally don’t share a ton of baby updates here on the blog, I’m sharing a bit today as I partner with Tommee Tippee to giveaway a set of their winter essentials for baby.

Baby C six months

Our little guy is now six months old and has been such a wonderful addition to our family. He is generally a very easy baby, with one exception. He hates taking a bottle. Even when it’s mama’s milk, he was very difficult to feed when I was out of the house. We were told to supplement his feeding with extra pumped milk due to his slow weight gain, but he refused the bottles. We had to start solid food at four months to make sure he was getting enough calories since he tends to sleep through the typical night-time feedings. (I know, terrible, right?) Even though that wasn’t what I planned, we all had to adjust.

tommee tippee winter essentials #giveaway

Now at six months, we had turned a slight corner. We switched over to the Tommee Tippee bottles I was given and switched to the faster flow nipple. Finally we have some success when it comes to a bottle. Although he does tend to growl his way through it, at least I know he won’t go hungry if I’m working. We are also using the electric bottle and food warmer, more often for the food. He likes his meal on the warmer side so it’s handy to put in a jar while I’m getting meals ready. I like using this instead of a microwave for his food as we try to rely on a microwave less and less.  Connor is still breastfed primarily and we hope to until he can have regular cow’s milk.

Now you can win a very fun winter essentials pack from Tommee Tippee. If you don’t need it, get it for a friend or donate it to a local charity. The contest is open to US residents only and ends at midnight, Friday December 20th.

The Tommee Tippee winter essentials pack includes:

·         Limited edition snowflake bottle and pacifier set (available exclusively at Target). The winter-themed snowflake gift set includes 3-9 oz. Bottles and 2 pacifiers, and retails for $19.99.

·         Our Closer to Nature Electric Bottle and Food Warmer, which heats bottles and baby food quickly and safely

·         Hat + mittens to keep your baby warm for the first snow (winner to specify if they have a boy or girl and will receive the gender-appropriate set; please note that both are pictured below)

·         Hand warmers for mom + dad to stay toasty

·         Hot chocolate for mom + dad to enjoy while baby’s drinking from his or her snowflake bottle

I have a little helper now to feed Connor.

Disclosure: I have received Tommee Tippee products when Connor was first born…thank you! We have been using the products above and the Diaper Disposal system too (that seals each individual diaper…when we use disposables at night.) All opinions shared here are my own.

For many moms, once they get pregnant, they become aware of buying organic food and making healthy eating choices. At some point,  you may question your beauty care routine, the cleaners you use in your home and the toys your kids are chewing on. Our buying choices are not that simple these days. Today there are more than 80,000 chemicals registered for use in the U.S., many of which have not been tested for human safety. These toxic chemicals are entering our home environment, and we need to be educated to make the healthy choice.

Support the Chemical Safety Improvement Act

Postcards I wrote encouraging US Senators to support for the Chemical Safety Improvement Act.

This month I’m partnering with Seventh Generation and Healthy Child Healthy World to spread the message to support the Chemical Safety Improvement Act (CSIA) that is up for approval by congress. This bill hasn’t been changed in 35 years, and clearly times have changed. Remember all the baby bottle manufacturers that had to remove BPA in it’s products? It’s not because the government told them to, it’s because MOMS got together and were very loud and demanded a change. It would be awesome to see more Moms get together and voice their support for CSIA. You can learn more here and also show your support of updating the CSIA.  The stat that always jumps out to me is that there are 1328 chemicals in the European Union that have been banned….only 11 have been banned in the U.S. Let’s do something about it.

So are you ready to learn a little more about what to be aware of on product labels? Who can you trust? I got to participate in a virtual Healthy Baby Home Party and even I learned some new info about what to be concerned with. Turns out the “natural” unscented baby wipes I have been using have some questionable preservatives in them. I’m going to try out the Seventh Generation Wipes and see how we like them. (Seventh Generation baby products are now easily found at Target!)

We watched this video and it was eye-opening. What do you think?

Makes you think twice about the toys the kids are chewing on…especially in my case with a 5 month old teething baby.

Ready to learn a little more? Join in the Twitter chat next week on Thursday, November 14th at 1:00 EST.

Click here to join in and follow the conversation: http://twtvite.com/healthybabyhome

Join Seventh Generation for a fun, informative Twitter party to talk about all-natural baby product options! We’ll also talk about the Healthy Baby Home Party which give moms an interesting and engaging way to educate friends and family on topics like creating a healthy environment for the next generation. There will be a chance to win a month’s worth of diapers and wipes from Seventh Generation! There will be 5 winners, all chosen randomly from answering trivia questions.

Flip Cloth Diaper Review

It’s no secret that we are a mostly cloth diapering family. Yes, it is a little extra work but it’s just a normal part of our routine now. The one thing that always drives me crazy is having to stuff the diapers once they are clean. The Bum Genius diapers have been the only ones we used for the past four years. They just came out with a new hybrid diapering system called Flip. We tested out the Flip diapers for the past two weeks and I am excited to keep them as part of my diaper stash. (We got the diapers as part of a promotional program with Flip™ and MomSelect.)

Flip Diapers for babies and toddlers

Flip Diapers fit both a 14 week old and a 2 1/2 year old.

The best part of cloth diapering infants is you really get your money back when it comes to investing in cloth diapers. The Flip diapers will fit babies from 8 lb- 35 lb. I tested it out on our 14 week old 12 lb. infant and our two-year old toddler weighing 30 lb. They wore the same diaper and it fit well on both of them.

Hands down the best part about the diaper is how easy they are to wash, and there is no need to stuff! Well, minor stuffing where you just lay the insert into the cover. Nothing like trying to get the insert into the pocket diapers and trying to avoid damaging the inner waterproof lining with your wedding ring. Also, after the baby has used the diaper, there is no need to try to “unstuff” the diaper. This is rather handy after those epic blowouts.

My favorite diapers for babies are still the Bum Genius sized diapers. The size small diapers are much less bulky than the one-size-fits-all diapers (a.k.a. All in Ones). What I do like about the Flip diaper is the insert has a new fold over design that is softer and contoured better to the baby’s body. Plus it’s super soft, even after washing it a few times.

Flip Diaper sized insert

With the two-year old, we are in that transitional stage of diaper wearing and potty training. We used the outer diaper covers over underwear to control any possible leaks. I like knowing I can use the covers for both kids when we were out for a day trip.

The hybrid part of the system is handy when you are on the go, but probably not as useful for our family right now. The insert is fairly large and the waste would be more than an infant sized diaper. There were not any leaks when either boy used them, so the idea is you can reuse the covers and then put in a disposable insert. I am so trained to put the entire diaper into the wash it will take a look to get me to make this kind of switch!

Head over to their website to learn more about the Flip diapers. I tried out the velcro (hook and loop) closure, but I also found the snap Flip diapers over on Amazon. Snaps will hold up better over time, but the velcro is very easy to use.

Thanks to Mom Select and Flip for sharing the diapers with us! All opinions shared here are my own.

Babys First Beach Trip

Have you ever felt intimidated about bringing a baby to the beach? While it’s not always the easiest adventure, I wanted to share with you a few of our must pack items. We are preparing for our annual beach vacation, this time with a newborn in tow. Here are some tips to make life on the beach with a baby a little easier on everyone.

  • Beach Hats – always pack more than one as they often get wet or sandy
  • Coverup swim suits are much easier than trying to keep up with sunscreen on wiggly, wet babies. If your baby is old enough to play in a little water, pack two suits.
  • Beach Tent– get one with a SPF rating of 50+
  • Sunscreen Blanket – I bought one from Coolibar to try and I bought one for my sister from Isis Parenting.
  • Aden and Anais blankets are a must. They work as a nursing cover, and also to cover a stroller on a walk.
  • Umbrella – get a good one. Ours is from Coolibar that has a high SPF. The cheap ones don’t give great sun protection and they are also tricky in the wind. We also use a sand anchor with our umbrella to make it secure.
  • Water Bottle for Mom, especially if you are nursing. I love my new Lifefactory glass water bottle I ordered. The flip top cap to make it easy to me to drink it on the go.
  • Cover Up for Mom. If you stay cool, baby will stay cool.
  • Safe sunscreen for both baby and Mom. Avoid using a cheaper chemical based sunscreen on your body and just the safe stuff for baby. Babies often fall asleep against your chest and can have a bad reaction to sunscreen from your body. (Ask me how I know…)
  • Stroller- a bassinet (or pram) stroller  gives newborn babies a little more breathing room. I don’t suggest using the car seat for newborns as they get too hot strapped in during a nap.

What else would you add to the list? Let me know if you have any questions about bringing baby to the beach!

There are a couple of affiliate links included in this post, however all items featured were purchased by me and not included as a review.

Magic Beans Drool Baby Expo

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the Drool Baby Expo organized by Magic Beans for the second year in a row. It’s an event highlighting the latest baby gear, clothes, trends, local companies and more. Since we are having our third baby fairly soon, we don’t need too much stuff at this stage of parenting. I did find myself excited by a couple of new items that would be worthwhile for a new mom or a third time mom.

Blooming Baby Bath

Adorable Blooming Baby Bath. I don’t love our current plastic tub because of space issues so I may give this one a try.

4-moms-mamaroo-classic-silver

4moms mamaRoo swing is very cool and I loved the movement choices. A great upgrade from the traditional swing options.

Purely Pears Boston Baby Food

Loved the display from Purely Pears highlighting what fresh baby food should look like.

I did see a number of items that are cute and fun from a novelty perspective, but really not worth the investment if you are creating your priority list of baby needs. A fancy labor gown is really not necessary. Trust me when I say your outfit is the last thing you will be thinking about during delivery. My old boss gave me a great tip once, pack a beautiful pashmina or scarf. Add that around you for some pre/post baby pictures to give your pictures a little more color. Otherwise, just let the focus be on that new little baby.

Also, if anyone is thinking about buying a stroller that requires two hands to fold it, don’t do it. I made this mistake with my first stroller purchase and  just wish I knew how often I would only have one hand free to fold down a stroller. The stroller was expensive and works well, but I tried to avoid folding it and bringing it in the car, ever. The great part of being at the expo is being able to try out all these strollers yourselves and have the brand expert answer all your questions. You can find lots of other stroller experts at your local Magic Beans store as well.

Disclosure: I attended the Drool Baby event to offer media coverage, which covered the cost of my ticket. All opinions expressed here are my own.

Walmart Overnight Diapers RandomRecycling

I don’t talk about it much here on the blog, but we are a cloth diapering family. My friends know this and ask questions when they see the cute cloth diapers my kids wear. What they don’t see is that we made a choice a long time ago to use disposable diapers for nighttime. Is it a perfect, eco-friendly choice? No, but I’m ok with our decision as a family. As the tagline here says, our story is all about green living for modern families. As someone who felt really comfortable with cloth diapers, I was intimidated by complicated process of nighttime cloth diapers when my daughter was just a few months old.

Cloth diapers or disposables for nighttime

I did try the “doublers” with my cloth diapers and they just didn’t work for us. The babies and sheets got wet in the middle of the night, plus they seemed awfully uncomfortable in the oversized diapers. I looked into options with wool inserts, but the complicated process of prepping them was just too much for me when I was a full-time working mom with a new baby. Early on I found a brand of cloth diapers that worked and I often saved money by buying “seconds.” The overnight diaper choices were often a lot more expensive and I just didn’t want to make the investment.

Fast forward four years, I have two children wearing overnight diapers. One generally wears pull-ups and the other one wears standard overnight diapers. I’ve never been loyal to one brand as I usually try to buy what is the best price. Overnight diapers are more expensive than regular disposables, but once your child needs that extra nighttime protection, you just have to make the switch.

Parents Choice Diapers Sizing

I like seeing the size of the diapers clearly on the back. Much easier when you have multiple children in diapers.

We recently had the opportunity to try out the Walmart Parent’s Choice Overnight Baby Diapers. Our little guy gave them a test drive and they worked just as well as the other brands we have purchased. He liked them because they had little bears on them. I liked them because there were no leaks. I recently purchased a more eco-friendly pull-up option for my daughter to try at night. Every morning she changes out of the pull-up AND her pajama bottoms because they are damp. With the new baby on the way, I’m trying to reduce the amount of laundry I need to do, not increase it. Not all overnight diapers can stand up to the job. The Parent’s Choice diapers are a lot less money than most of the other brands I have bought before at only $0.16/diaper. Compare this to their competitors at $0.31-$0.42/diaper and it is a great value. You can also get it delivered, although I do wish they offered free shipping for their diapers like Amazon or Diapers.com.

With a new baby arriving soon, we will be in diapering land for a few more years to come. You have to make choices that work for your family, your schedule and your budget. I hope you find a system that you are comfortable with and give the Parent’s Choice overnight diapers a test run yourself.

What works for your family when it comes to diapering your kids?

Night time protection for babies is an important consideration for parents as their little one grows. Ordinary diapers may not have enough absorbent capacity to handle multiple voids over long periods of time with older babies. When wet mornings become the norm, parents start looking for more protection to guard against overnight leaks.

parents choice overnight diapers

Parent’s Choice Overnight Baby Diapers are super absorbent for overnight and long-trip protection. This is an overnight diaper at prices that everyone can afford!
