We are slowly transitioning from summer to fall with the start of back to school and cooler weather. Actually, the cooler weather has left town for the weekend and we get to enjoy one more heat wave in New England.  (Typical)  I do love when the seasons change, and it’s a great opportunity for us to step back and appreciate the beauty in change.

And speaking of beauty, I’ve been taking a hard look at my supply of beauty products.  This spring, I became much more committed to eating more organic and real food.  I feel it’s important to be more aware of what I’m putting on my body, especially now that we are expecting another little one next winter.  In a moment of great timing, Sarah from Three Seeds Naturals offered to share some of her product line with me. Her line of lotions, scrubs and lip balm contain no parabens and no phthalates.   I got to try the variety pack of Body Lotions, the Lemongrass Extra Moisturizing cream, and a Coconut Lime lip balm (yummy).  My skin is really sensitive so I’m always trying to find the right lotion.  Sarah’s combinations appear to be just the right amount of moisture and scent, which is no small task.  I haven’t gotten any of the red bumps I usually get from hand lotion…the real test will be in the dead of winter!  Sarah’s favorite scent is the Signature Pomegranate, but I’m a huge fan of Lemongrass.  The Extra Moisturizing Cream in Lemongrass reminds me of getting a spa massage…a little piece of heaven.  I keep it next to my bed to put on at night as it is thicker than the Everyday Body Lotion.  If anyone has a sensitivity to fragrance, I love that Sarah has the option for an unscented lotion.
I’m always intrigued/impressed/curious when I learn about women that start their own companies stemming from a passion.  I asked Sarah how and why she started Three Seeds Naturals.

I started trying to eat more natural food and it dawned on me that what we put on our bodies is just as important as what we put in our bodies, so I wanted to try to create something as natural as possible, but something fun. So I thought a lot about what part of the idea I was most passionate about, and it really was the aspect of the Seasons and the scents that come to mind for each. The name Three Seeds refers to the Greek myth of Persephone and Demeter and how the seasons originally started. The Three Seeds are actually pomegranate seeds from the myth – so that’s why that’s the signature scent and then there is one for each season.

Another reason I was happy with Sarah’s product line is ability to recycle the empty lotion containers.  The full size bottles are all plastics #1 or #2.  I am trying to be mindful of how my purchases are packaged so there is less waste.  These fit the bill.

Thanks Sarah for introducing your product line to me! I wish you much success in selling Three Seeds Naturals on in my Shop, Open Sky and the craft show circuit.  If anyone has questions about the products, feel free to ask.

Although my daughter is in daycare full time year round, I still get the back-to-school bug.  I think with September around the corner, it’s hard not to think of a fresh start when it comes to routines.  One routine I want to shake up is our box lunch routine.  My two goals for this fall season: 1. Pack more the night before to help get out the door faster and 2. Offer more variety.  I also want to start packing more lunches for myself and husband, as it’s typically healthier and more affordable than buying it.

I was excited by this picture to learn more about Bento boxes, which refers to a Japanese packed meal.  There are dividers for keeping food separate, and also artfully arranged.

photo from Alpha Mom.com blog and guest writer Wendolonia

I read am amazing post at Alpha Mom’s blog (written by guest poster Wendolonia) and it inspired me to rethink how I currently pack lunches.  If I can manage to pack our lunches the night before, I could actually put something like this together.  My daughter is 19 months and very happy with lots of choices for lunch.  A bento box is a great option for small fingers, especially the adorable floral cutouts of bread and cheese! (I would save the leftover bread and use for breadcrumbs) I found these similar flower cookie cutters at Amazon: Kaiser Bakeware Flower Cookie Cutter, Set of 6.  This post also made me rethink cold cuts, as the presentation is much more appetizing than a traditional sandwich.  Since presentation is half the fun with a bento box, the silicon baking cups below are a great idea for housing small fruits or veggies.

Wilton Easy Flex Silicone 3-Inch Reusable Baking Cups, 12 Count
I need to find the right container to put together a Bento box lunch.  All the items inside need to fit tightly so your pretty presentation doesn’t fall apart in transit.  If anyone is already making Bento box lunches, I would appreciate your feedback on the container you use.  For further info on creatively making Bento boxes, check out Wendolonia’s blog.
Having a couple of go-to items to pack when time is tight is essential.  My favorites right now are the Plum Organics Mish Mash fruit (Plum Organics Mish Mash, Strawberry, 3.17-Ounce Pouches (Pack of 16)) and the GoodOnYa Bar.  You can purchase a sample set of the GoodOnYa Bar for $10, and get free shipping.by using the code: FREESHIPSAMPLER. The organic bars are a great addition to the grown-ups lunch boxes.  Plus, for every sampler of theGoodOnYa bar sold, Open Sky will donate $1 towards the Lunch Box Project. The Lunch Box Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering families, schools, and producers to help offer more nutritious and whole foods to school children.
In order to help me meet my goal of more variety, I have been reading more food blogs lately for inspiration.  My current favorite is Weelicious.com, where I got a great recipe to make hummus mini sandwiches for snack using sesame rice crackers.  I also am trying to cook larger portions at dinner so there is more leftover for lunches for all of us.  After dinner, it’s easy to divide up the leftovers in lunch containers to get ready for the next day.
Hopefully I can find more inspiration in all the great back-to-school posts this week from other bloggers.  If anyone else has some favorite lunch box ideas I would love for you to share in a comment below. Good luck to all the parents packing lunches again in the coming weeks!

I always appreciate some unexpected gifts at a baby shower.  While it’s great to receive the big ticket items off your registry, it’s the unique gifts that can be most memorable.  Here’s a couple of eco-chic gifts to bring along to your next baby shower.
1. Zubel’s organic toys.

  • Both my daughter at 19 months love her ballerina Zubel, which she liked to make dance, and my godson also loved to grab and shake his whale Zubel at only 7 months.
  • made from 100% organic knit cotton
  • minimal packaging which is always great in my book.
  • great value with choices starting at $15, they add a personal touch to the top of a registry purchase box.
  • Currently available at Shop Kitson and PolkaDotPatch.  Visit Zubel’s for more info and a list of future retailers.

2. Duck Duck Green

  • Adorable gift sets for a new arrival. My favorite is the Bathtime Kit featured above.  There are so many cute choices, check them out at Duck Duck Green
  • Packaged in recycled kraft.  Perfect to ship to a friend far away when you can’t make the shower.
  • Put together your own gift set from Duck Duck Green’s assortment of eco-gifts for baby.
3. WallPops Art

  • I put these on my daughter’s wall and she loves them!  I love them too because it was so easy to install…just peek and stick!
  • Wall decals come in a variety of themes to correspond with a new nursery.  Instead of choosing excessively packaged decor, WallPops are a great alternative.  I recycled the box and paper backing once the decals are on the wall.
  • We got Dakota the Cow, but it was so hard to make a choice. All of the animals are so cute at WallPops!  Now I’m thinking about choosing a “grown-up” theme for our hallway.

I will admit, I do have a love affair with my Iphone.  Especially with all the many apps that have helped me get organized/plan dinner/find a Starbucks/etc.  My latest favorite is the Hipstamatic app, which takes vintage looking photos. There are three lenses that are offered in the initial purchase of the app (which is $1.99). There are additional lenses available as a package that you can add on as well.  To change lenses, just swipe across the screen.

I think it gives a great new look to photos I want to post on my blog.  Above is the latest green pepper from my container garden.  I just love how the Hipstamatic photo has a different edge…plus it’s framed.  If you are using this app, I would love to see pictures.  Leave a link in the comment section and I’ll check it out.
Thanks!

Tonight was one of those nights when we need to use up some random ingredients in our fridge so they didn’t go bad.  Our favorite meal to prepare when we need to do this is omelets.  I am a firm believer in “breakfast for dinner” nights, and tonight was the night.

Here was the random list of ingredients we needed to use up:
1. Jar of salsa
2. Green pepper  (lots coming in from the garden)
3. Mexican cheese  (see a theme here…I made taco salad at the beginning of the week)
4. Zucchini
5. Lemonade

Here is the list of omelets I made:
1. Little M gets egg and mexican cheese, with raw green peppers on the side.
2. Mama gets egg, mexican cheese, more monteray jack cheese (can’t have too much cheese), salsa and sauteed green peppers.
3. Dada gets all of the above, plus two pieces of deli turkey breast.  (“If it’s not meat, it’s just a snack.”  Still working on sneaking in a meatless Monday somehow…)

We all got steamed zucchinni on the side, and I had watered down lemonade to top it off.

Not only are omelets great for a mid-week dinner, you can throw a variety of ingredients in to use up what’s in the fridge.  We try very hard not to waste food, since a. It’s expensive and b. It’s unnecessary with a little planning.

I also tested out the new Green Street utensils made by Robinson Home.  Did you notice the cute flipper above with the leaf cut-outs?  It’s actually made from recycled water bottles!  It takes about 2-3 plastic bottles to create one of the kitchen tools.  The tool feels substantial for a plastic utensil, and is in a bright green color.  What says “green” better than green!  Some of the tools have the leaf cut-out design like mine above, others are solid.  You can purchase the new Green Street tools from kitchencollection.com . They would make a great conversation piece as part of a wedding shower gift.  Include it on the outside of a wrapped present and explain where it came from.  Or treat yourself to a little eco-gift, it won’t break the bank at only $3.99 each!

Dishes are done, and the refrigerator is a little more organized now.  If you have a moment, I would love to hear what is your favorite recipe to use up leftovers?

Disclosure: I was provided a sample of the Green Street kitchen utensils. It did not influence my opinion in writing this post. The tools in no way made my food taste better or make me cook faster, but I love them anyway.

Would you believe me if I said I wore jewelry out to a dinner party that was made from old Barnes and Nobles bags?  If I didn’t see for myself, I wouldn’t believe it either.

The bangles were a great conversation starter, as no one would have guessed the original material.  The bangles were handmade by Garbage of Eden, which uses all different shop’s plastic bags.  You can find white bracelets made from Duane Reed bags or blue ones from New York Times newspaper bags.  I was happy with the two that come in each purchase, but feel four makes a better fashion statement.  Garbage of Eden makes unique eco-accessories from recycled items they find in New York City.

The price is right for these bangles, only $17 for two.  Not only does it ship fast, but it arrives in eco-friendly packaging.

I had to capture the shredded flyers used for packaging.  Recyclable, and free!

You can purchase the Dark Green B&N; bangle here:

I’m off to a dinner party tonight at our friend’s new home. I’m bringing along a batch of my garden fresh pesto.  I serve it with fresh baked bread, bought from a local bakery.  This is the appetizer served at my favorite restaurant in town, Sweet Basil’s, so I always enough trying to make it taste as good as the restaurants.

The basil in our garden is doing better than anything else.  The hot July sun hasn’t slowed down the growth at all, thankfully.

The fresh basil, with a couple of my cherry tomatoes peeking out.
Here’s the quick Pesto recipe I like to prepare when I’m off to a party and need to use up my basil.
1/2 cup walnuts (lightly toasted)
2 cups fresh basil
1 1/2 tablespoons of lemon juice (fresh from lemons is milder than from concentrate)
3-4 garlic cloves  (if you want more of a kick, add more garlic)
1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
I use my food processor to make this…toss in the walnuts and pulse 3-4 times.  Add basic and pulse 3-4 times.  Add in the lemon juice, garlic and Parmesan cheese.  Pulse again 3-4 times.  Scrape down the sides of the bowl.  Add olive oil slowly while the food processor remains on.  Make sure it doesn’t get too soupy.  Season with a dash of salt and pepper.
I like to serve this with bread, but it’s also great with tomatoes and mozzarella as a spin on the classic salad.  Or go traditional with pesto and your favorite pasta.  Either way, it’s a great way to eat local (from your backyard) and share the wealth with friends.  And now I’m off to dinner, looks like it will be a beautiful night outside Boston.

Don’t you love when you find a cool item for your home, and then realize it’s actually vintage?  Not only does it look good, but it’s giving new life to an old item.  I had to have one of these vintage Key Plates, the tough part was choosing which color!  I decided to go with the blue-green color which works with my yellow walls in our downstairs bathroom.  The decor in the room is centered around wine and vintage bottles so the vintage key plate fit right in.  I love that I could use it for not just towels, but keys by the front door, or combined with a collection of the key plates to make a beautiful wall decoration.  One note for everyone, since the Key Plates are vintage, there are variations in the shape of each plate, complete with a skeleton key.  It’s not a defect, it’s just a unique surprise when you receive your own Key Plate.

By the way, today is the big day.  Want to know why?  If you were wondering what the countdown badge meant for the past few weeks, here is the answer.  My personalized shop is now open for business, powered by OpenSky. I love that I get to feature unique product for my readers that I have found either beautiful, useful, or both.  You don’t have to leave my website to make a purchase, just click the “Add to Cart” button below. Plus, for any product you are not happy with, you have a full year to return it.  It’s an amazing return policy, which I expect works because the personal connection made with shopping via our site should help eliminate confusion in making a purchase.  If you have a question about a product featured, please don’t hesitate to ask.  I would be happy to share further my experiences with the product.

Want to know the even better part about today?  This is the part you will really care about…from now until August 16th, you can get 25% off anything in our shop, or anyone else’s OpenSky shop.  Just use the CODE: EXCITE25

I am looking forward to sharing some great recycled and eco-friendly products with you all very soon.  Till then, go shopping and pick out your favorite vintage Key Plate and don’t forget to use the extra 25% off code, EXCITE25.

Going to a party and need a hostess gift?  Hosting a party yourself?  I love my latest find, Rock Paper Scissors’s adorable coasters made from recycled paper pulp. They are great to have on hand for an impromptu get together, as the guest or the host.  Fun fact, the coasters can be recycled once they have partied enough.  Cradle to cradle…a great product in my book.

Another bonus, they are on SALE!  Check out Rock Scissor Paper to see the wide variety of designs.  They come in a pack of 12 and are on sale now for only $6.38.  Happy shopping!

The Unhealthy Truth: How Our Food Is Making Us Sick - And What We Can Do About It
For bookclub this summer, we selected a number of books for everyone to choose from.  We give ourselves two months to read at least two books to discuss with the group.  Our goal is to hopefully read a mix of books to then share with others if we think it’s a worth while read.  I can’t wait to talk with my friends about my first book, The Unhealthy Truth, by Robyn O’Brien. The tagline on this book hooked me in: How our food is making us sick-and what we can do about it.

The book written by a mom of four, and her youngest has been diagnosed with an allergy to eggs.  This was the catalyst for O’Brien to start digging into the facts about allergens in our food.  She was met with resistance from both the medical community, her own family, and national allergy foundations.  Despite it all, she pulls together a great book that shares her conclusions about what is wrong with our food system today.
I learned a lot from reading this book, even though we do not have any food allergies in our family.  There is great information about how to feed your family healthy, real foods.  It also raised my awareness about the differences in products sold in the US vs abroad.  Did you know some US companies take the harmful chemicals OUT of their products sold in Britain, but keep them IN the same product sold in the US?  O’Brien gives a voice to American moms who want to give their kids the best stuff, not second rate product.  I’m going to do more research myself on how we can better voice our desire for products without harmful preservatives.  It isn’t right that food companies think American families don’t care about the foods they feed their families.  We can use the power of the purse to show them that we will choose organic products and those with growth hormones.
If you want to learn more about Robyn’s challenges with having a child with a food allergy, please read The Unhealthy Truth: How Our Food Is Making Us Sick – And What We Can Do About It [Hardcover]  I think you will find yourselves reading food labels like you never have before, and getting really sick to your stomach.
